Aurick Virgil turned one month on the seventh of November.

This may be the latest one-month update I have ever posted–a full week late. Aurick, I hope you don’t mind.
By the time of the writing of this post, Aurick is already well out of his sleepy newborn phase and more alert, interactive (sort of), and difficult to get to sleep during the day. This is a relief, as he was very sleepy as a sleepy newborn, to the point that he didn’t eat very well, and, consequently, didn’t gain weight very well. He actually did not nurse more than a couple of minutes in his first twenty-four hours. As a result, I called the lactation consultant for the first time since Ephraim’s birth. Is it normal for a brand-new baby to not nurse? As it turns out, yes. She predicted he’d wake up and start at it after his first day was over. And she was right–though he was still kind of lazy even so. But we’re past that now, thankfully, and he’s gaining weight properly.

I’m not sure who he looks like. Sometimes Anselm, sometimes Clive, sometimes Eldore, in his profile, face shape, and nose width, respectively. And while it’s hard to believe it, every Krans boy has been born with that same dark hair.

Like Beatrice as a newborn, his fussy periods are relegated to daylight hours, and not nighttime. I am still not sure if this is easier than having a baby whose days and nights are mixed up. Anselm asks me constantly, “Are his eyes open?” And increasingly, the answer is yes.

He’s starting to really look at things when he’s awake, rather than roll his eyes around aimlessly. He likes light (who doesn’t?) and he occasionally will train his eyes on you, if your face is close enough. Then he will even smile; though he is more likely to do this if you are singing to him. He really likes singing.

The last characteristic of note is his ability to go from totally asleep to a full-throated cry in less than a second. This is somewhat jarring at night. While some babies have been grunty (Ephraim, Eldore) and take a while to work up their grievances before wailing, others (Clive, Aurick) are either totally content or totally angry, with little to no in-between. Also, he really hates having his diaper changed. It’s the worst.
